From the source

The abbey church of Sainte-Foy stands at the centre of Conques, in Aveyron. Built during the eleventh and twelfth centuries, it is a major surviving example of southern French Romanesque architecture. Its west doorway carries a Last Judgement carved with 124 figures. The interior contains sculpted capitals on two levels, including upper galleries, and contemporary stained glass by Pierre Soulages. The church is a component of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela in France, inscribed by UNESCO in 1998; this designation should not be confused with a separate inscription for the entire village. The treasury preserves medieval goldsmiths’ work associated with the cult of Sainte Foy. The tourist office’s information checked on 11 October 2026 announces that the treasury is closed until further notice for security reasons. The church and treasury are therefore distinct parts of a visit, with different access arrangements.

Editorial reading

Conques rewards a change of scale. Seen above the roofs, the church is the organising presence of the settlement. At the doorway, its architecture becomes a dense field of faces, gestures and judgement. Inside, Soulages’s restrained glass changes the relationship between daylight and Romanesque stone without imitating the medieval sculpture. Looking between these three scales gives the place more depth than treating it as an isolated masterpiece or a picturesque village backdrop.

Recommendation

Begin on the forecourt with the tympanum, then enter the church outside service times. A guided gallery visit brings the capitals and glass closer; upper-level access is accompanied and subject to the published conditions. Check the tourist office before planning a treasury visit: its current closure notice takes precedence over older opening information.
