Cathédrale de Bourges
A Gothic cathedral whose five aisles, sculpture and stained glass form an unusually continuous interior.
From the source
Saint-Étienne Cathedral stands in Bourges, in the Cher department of Centre-Val de Loire. Built from the late twelfth to late thirteenth centuries, it has a five-aisled plan with chapels around the choir. Double flying buttresses help support the high central space and admit light through the surrounding walls. UNESCO highlights the proportions, the coherence of the interior and the quality of its sculpture and stained glass. The central west doorway carries a Last Judgement; other sculpted entrances and later windows show that decoration continued across successive centuries. The cathedral entered the World Heritage List in 1992. Its significance concerns the building as a whole, including structure, light and decoration, rather than a single object within it.

Editorial reading
Bourges is best approached through movement. Walking along a side aisle and then turning towards the centre reveals how the graduated spaces remain connected. The exterior buttresses explain the forces at work inside; the glass and carved figures give that engineering a human and narrative scale. Allow these relationships to emerge before concentrating on individual works.
Recommendation
Begin outside with the west portals and a walk around the buttresses, then follow the side aisles towards the choir. Visit outside services and check current arrangements for any tower or crypt access separately. UNESCO’s record documents heritage significance and is not an admission timetable.
