Palais des Papes
A fortified papal residence in Avignon, where monumental halls and painted apartments record the fourteenth-century court.
From the source
The Palais des Papes dominates Avignon beside the Rhône. Its principal construction belongs to the fourteenth century, when the city was the seat of the papacy. The Old Palace developed under Benedict XII; his successor Clement VI built the New Palace, including the great papal chapel. Ceremonial halls, private apartments and painted rooms served different aspects of a court with religious and political authority. Surviving decoration includes work associated with Matteo Giovannetti. Later uses, including barracks after the Revolution, and subsequent restoration also form part of the building’s history. The palace belongs to the Historic Centre of Avignon World Heritage property, inscribed in 1995 with the episcopal ensemble and the surviving Saint-Bénézet bridge. The palace is a component of that ensemble, not a separate UNESCO property.

Editorial reading
The exterior expresses enclosure and defence, while the interiors reveal a court organised around ceremony, administration and private life. The most revealing comparison is between the scale of the great halls and the intimacy of the painted apartments. Stepping back into the city then places those rooms within a wider landscape of episcopal buildings, walls and river crossings.
Recommendation
Visit the palace with time for its painted rooms and interpretation, then connect it on foot to the neighbouring episcopal quarter and river outlooks. Check the official palace website for the current route and ticket options. The palace, bridge and other museums can have separate admission arrangements.
